Working in the Community with Tesco

Monday, May 23, 2011
Merson Signs, and in particular our Tesco Apprentices, have been working closely with Tesco to deliver a community project at Scarborough Cricket Club.

The Yorkshire-based club has the largest cricket grounds in the UK outside of test match stadiums and seats over 10,000 people. They have a rich heritage dating back to 1849 and presently provide an important service to the community by promoting uptake in the sport; running 7 cricket teams including 4 youth teams.

The upkeep and maintenance of these world-renowned grounds would be financially crippling for a community club such as Scarborough Cricket Club, which is why Tesco, Merson Signs, other Tesco Suppliers and local companies decided to help out.

Tesco are one of our key customers – we’ve worked with them closely over the past 5 years delivering a growing number of their store signage requirements across the whole of the UK. The Tesco Apprenticeship Scheme is designed to develop closer working relationships with Tesco’s key suppliers and build a pool of talent that, in the longer-term, could take up a position directly within their property team or manage Tesco projects for a supplier such as Merson.

We employ 6 Tesco Apprentices (Alan, Chloe, Gemma, Lynsey, Quentin and Vinnie) who all attended and worked closely with other Tesco Apprentices from around the UK to clean up, paint and generally help refurbish the Scarborough Cricket Club stadium. In addition, Merson Signs designed, manufactured and installed new signage at the club completely free-of-charge including directional signage around the grounds and a new scoreboard.

It’s great to get involved in community projects where our help can make a real difference. Working alongside Tesco will give us further opportunities like this and we’ll keep you posted on our involvement.
